چکیده

Encoding time is one of the most important features of the mammalian brain. The visual system, comprising almost half of the brain is of no exception. Time processing enables us to make goal-directed behavior in the optimum “time window” and launch a ballistic eye movement, reach/grasp an object or direct our processing resources (attention) from one point of interest to another. In addition, encoding time is critical for higher cognitive functions, enabling us to make causal inferences. The limitations of temporal individuation in the visual stream seem to vary across the visual field: the resolution gradually drops as objects become farther away from the center of gaze, where little differences were found in terms of resolution for objects in the upper versus lower visual field. This resolution of temporal individuation is vastly different from the resolution ascribed to spatial individuation. If individuation is mediated through attention, as some researchers have proposed, the general term ”attention” seems to possess different properties, at least regarding temporal and spatial processing. Next we looked at another aspect of encoding time: Temporal Order Judgments (TOJ), where animals had to judge the relative timing onset of two visual events. After training two monkeys on the task, we recorded from neurons in the lateral intraparietal

Mixed Qualitative/Quantitative Dynamic Simulation of Processing Systems

In this article the methodology proposed by Li and Wang for mixed qualitative and quantitative modeling and simulation of temporal behavior of processing unit is reexamined and extended to more complex case. The main issue of their approach considers the multivariate statistics of principal component analysis (PCA), along with clustered fuzzy digraphs and reasoning. The PCA and fuz...

Auditory Temporal Processing Abilities in Early Azari-Persian Bilinguals

Introduction: Auditory temporal resolution and auditory temporal ordering are two major components of the auditory temporal processing abilities that contribute to speech perception and language development. Auditory temporal resolution and auditory temporal ordering can be evaluated by gap-in-noise (GIN) and pitch-pattern-sequence (PPS) tests, respectively. In this survey, the effect of biling...

Emotion Processing in Patients with Early- and Late-Onset Temporal Lobe Epilepsy

Objective: Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE) can contribute to various emotional symptoms by damaging the temporal lobe. This study aimed at investigating emotion processing in patients with early- and late-onset TLE compared to a healthy group. Methods: In this causal-comparative study, 60 patients with diagnosed TLE were compared to 60 healthy controls to identify emotion processing styles. The d...

GPS Jamming Detection in UAV Navigation Using Visual Odometry and HOD Trajectory Descriptor

Auto-navigating of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in the outdoor environment is performed by using the Global positioning system (GPS) receiver. The power of the GPS signal on the earth surface is very low. This can affect the performance of GPS receivers in the environments contaminated with the other source of radio frequency interference (RFI). GPS jamming and spoofing are the most serious a...

An fMRI study of human visual cortex in response to spatiotemporal properties of visual stimuli

ABSTRACT  Background: The brain response to temporal frequencies (TF) has been already reported, but with no study reported for different TF with respect to various spatial frequencies (SF).  Materials and Methods: fMRI was performed by 1.5T GE-system in 14 volunteers during checkerboard, with TFs of 4, 6, 8 and 10Hz in low and high SFs of 0.5 and 8cpd.  Results: Average percentage BOLD signa...

Repeatability of Detecting Visual Cortex Activity in Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Introduction As functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is too expensive and time consuming, its frequent implementation is difficult. The aim of this study is to evaluate repeatability of detecting visual cortex activity in fMRI. Materials and Methods In this study, 15 normal volunteers (10 female, 5 male; Mean age±SD: 24.7±3.8 years) attended. Functional magnetic resonance images were ob...
